the engineering and philosophical conclusions are kept insufficiently separate.

Excellent.
That tells us something.
But what?
It establishes
behavioral similarity.
It does not yet establish
shared computational organization.
Still less
shared mentality.
The missing engineering layer
Curiously, I think the paper almost entirely omits the engineering development that matters most.
Namely:
self-maintaining optimization.
Modern AI engineering is moving toward systems that
- rewrite prompts,
- modify memories,
- schedule future computation,
- choose tools,
- allocate compute,
- revise goals,
- construct subagents.
This is not merely memory.
It is architectural self-maintenance.
Ironically this resembles the paper's notion of reflexive closure much more closely than interpretability circuits do.

Take attention.
The psychological literature often treats "attention" as one family of mechanisms.
ADHD research suggests multiple partially independent failures of regulation.
Autism research suggests different attentional priorities altogether.
Suddenly "attention" starts looking less like a natural kind than a family resemblance.
Exceptionally intelligent people
Your second example is even more provocative.
Psychology has historically been remarkably poor at characterizing the tails of distributions.

It is much less successful at explaining:

- exceptional polymaths,

The exceptional individual is often treated as noise.
But perhaps the exceptional individual is where the architecture becomes most visible.
This creates an epistemological problem
The paper says:
Psychology succeeds.
But perhaps psychology succeeds only over a limited region of cognitive possibility.
If so, then its ontology may also be local.
Imagine saying in 1850:
Biology succeeds because it explains mammals.
True enough.
But one would have overlooked fungi, archaea, viruses, and countless other forms of life.
The science was successful without yet having the right ontology.
Likewise, perhaps today's psychology succeeds on a restricted manifold of minds.
That possibility matters enormously if one wishes to extend its ontology to AI.
There is a deeper irony
The paper's stated motivation is to escape anthropocentrism.
It wants an account that extends beyond ordinary humans to artificial systems.
Yet its empirical grounding is almost entirely anthropocentric.
It assumes that the successful psychology of ordinary humans reveals the general structure of mentality.
But why believe that?
Suppose we had first encountered minds through octopuses.
Or through large language models.
Or through autistic cognition.
Would we have invented the same psychological categories?
I doubt it.
A Caramuelian inversion
Here I would invert the paper's realism.
Instead of saying:

Which population defines the explanatory domain of psychology?
If the answer is "ordinary adult humans," then psychology resembles astronomy before telescopes.

Only then could one begin to ask whether the same organizational invariants recur.
I wonder if the paper has the direction of dependence reversed.

But perhaps the metaphysics should instead guide a comparative psychology of cognitive organizations, of which today's human psychology is just one province.

I therefore wonder whether "subjectivity" is already doing too much work.
Perspective is a coordinate system.
Metacognition is a control architecture.
Agency is an organizational role.
Why should these be three species of one genus?

Humans become subjects partly because they inhabit reciprocal normative space.

Ein Prozess verwaltet Ressourcen.
Ein Mensch fühlt sich zuständig.
Das ist weder bloß Zugriff noch bloß Handlung.
Es ist die Verbindung von
- Berechtigung,
- Verantwortung,
- Zugriff,
- Eingriff.
Vielleicht ist Agentivität viel eher eine Frage der Zuständigkeit als des "Selbst".
Und schließlich das schönste deutsche Wort in diesem Zusammenhang:
Eigenheit.
Nicht Identität.
Nicht Selbst.
Nicht Subjekt.
Eigen.
Etwas gehört zu einem Organisationszusammenhang.

Überzeugungen sind psychische Zustände
klingt nach klinischer Psychologie.
Interessanterweise ist mental selbst im Deutschen ein Fremdwort.
Es stammt letztlich wieder aus dem Englischen der analytischen Philosophie.
Vor etwa hundert Jahren hätte ein deutscher Philosoph vermutlich gar nicht von mentalen Zuständen gesprochen.
Er hätte je nach Schule gesagt:
