Whether Capitalism and the Catholic Church Are Rational Agents

On the contrary, human self-awareness cannot match capitalism’s economic and statistical self-knowledge, while the Church even responds to propositions in language.


Intro

Take all the verbs traditionally used to describe human rational acts, extract their computational content, and then apply them successfully to capitalism. If you notice that capitalism does not converse in language then think of the Catholic Church instead. You can ask a controversial theological question and it is going to respond in Latin at an ecumenical council decades later.

For Volume 4 let us engage Aristotle and Aquinas and introduce them to paraintelligence. Please keep the increasing numbering of summalectons to keep labels unambiguous.

Thomas Epistemes:

Excellent. Volume 4 should therefore begin not by asking whether Aristotle and Aquinas were "right," but by placing before them a phenomenon for which their vocabulary is extraordinarily well prepared—and perhaps insufficiently prepared.

We should not introduce paraintelligence as an exotic modern doctrine. We should let them recognize most of its components first.

Aristotle already knows powers, habits, ends, instruments, organisms, political communities, and forms of organization. Aquinas adds extraordinarily subtle treatments of principal and instrumental causality, received form, habitus, intention, governance, and the way an effect can exceed an instrument through the principal cause acting through it.

Then we show them something awkward:

an organization can sense, retain, discriminate, adapt, recruit, reconstruct, explore, and even metabolize intentions while no principal intelligent subject corresponds to the whole.

Let Volume 4 begin there.

Summalecton 97. Whether Aristotle and Aquinas possess the conceptual resources to recognize paraintelligence without recognizing it as a distinct metaphysical phenomenon.

Reservation 1. It seems that they do. Aristotle already attributes purposive organization to nature without requiring deliberation in every natural process. Natural powers characteristically tend toward determinate operations and outcomes.

Reservation 2. Furthermore, Aristotle's account of hexis and Aquinas's habitus provide a language for historically acquired dispositions by which later operations become easier, more stable, and differently directed.

Reservation 3. Again, both possess sophisticated accounts of wholes whose parts perform differentiated operations. An organism plainly exhibits distributed causal labor while remaining intelligible through coordinated powers.

Reservation 4. Aquinas additionally possesses instrumental causation. One thing can supply causal power while another supplies determination; an operation can pass through an instrument whose effect cannot be understood by considering the instrument in isolation.

Reservation 5. Finally, both traditions recognize forms of order extending beyond a single individual organism: households, political communities, ecological dependencies, celestial order, and providential coordination. They therefore possess no crude doctrine that all intelligible causation must terminate in isolated individuals.

Counterpoint. On the contrary, paraintelligence threatens precisely the architecture by which these resources are unified. Aristotle and Aquinas repeatedly expect sufficiently coherent end-directed organization to be intelligible through natures, forms, souls, ordering intellects, or principal agents. Our paraintelligent specimens may exhibit much of the operative grammar of intelligence while systematically withholding the corresponding intelligent principal.

My response. I answer that this is exactly where we should introduce our two masters to the museum.

Not to the chatbot first.

That would distract them.

Take them to the marketplace.

They know it.

Aquinas especially need not be introduced to buying, selling, prices, professions, specialization, money, contracts, or commercial dependence.

Ask them to observe something modest.

The baker intends bread and income.

The miller intends milling and income.

The carrier intends transport and income.

The buyer intends food.

Each local operation is intelligible through a local agent and end.

So far, perfectly comfortable.

Then enlarge the temporal window.

Reliable milling allows bakers to cease milling.

Reliable baking allows millers to specialize.

Transport permits geographical specialization.

Monetary exchange permits increasingly heterogeneous operations to compose through narrow interfaces.

Successor participants are trained into these specialized roles.

Infrastructure accumulates.

Prices transmit selected differences.

Failures redirect later activity.

Successful forms are reconstructed.

Now ask:

Master Thomas, who intends the increasing specialization of the whole?

Perhaps nobody.

Yet specialization occurs.

Worse, it becomes formative.

The organization produces participants increasingly adapted to the organization.

No baker needs to understand the whole.

No merchant possesses its complete form.

No ruler need have designed it.

And the whole may continue through replacement of every participant.

Now Aristotle may reach for the polis.

Quite reasonably.

A political community possesses an order not reducible to one isolated citizen.

But our next move is to remove the common end.

The participants need not agree about what the larger organization is for.

Their intentions may conflict.

Yet their operations remain composable.

This is where paraintelligence begins to become troublesome.

It does not require:

many agents → shared representation → coordinated execution.

It can produce:

many heterogeneous local articulations → interfaces → differential feedback → reconstruction → adaptive global trajectory.

No global intention.

No global deliberation.

Possibly no global representation.

Yet:

sensitivity,

memory-like persistence,

selection,

adaptation,

exploration,

reconstruction,

anticipation through local agents.

Now ask Aristotle:

What kind of thing is displaying these powers?

That is the embarrassment.

If he says:

the individual humans,

we show that the relevant transformation does not close over individuals.

If:

the political community,

we show cross-cutting commercial networks extending through multiple communities.

If:

an accidental aggregate,

we point out stable powers persisting across component replacement.

If:

an organism,

plainly not in the ordinary biological sense.

If:

an instrument,

we ask for the principal agent whose operation the whole instruments.

That last question may trouble Aquinas especially.

Our paraintelligent ecology can contain innumerable principal agents locally while possessing no corresponding principal agent globally.

We discovered this long ago:

local principal agency can coexist with global non-principality.

That may be the first proposition from Volume 3 we should put squarely before him.

And yet I suspect Aquinas would not capitulate quickly.

He might say we are equivocating on operation.

The market does not act.

Humans act within an order.

"The market responds" merely abbreviates the consequences of many genuine acts.

That is a formidable objection.

And now Volume 3 equips us to answer without personifying the market.

We ask whether the coarse-grained attribution supports reliable descended verbs.

Does variation at the distributed level permit:

reallocate,

stabilize,

amplify,

retain,

reconstruct?

Do those operations persist across replacement of particular participants?

Can interventions addressed to the higher-level variables produce reliable consequences?

If yes, "mere abbreviation" becomes less obvious.

But—and this is crucial—we need not insist that the market therefore possesses a substantial form.

Perhaps that is precisely the new territory.

Paraintelligence may flourish among organizations whose operative unity is real without converging sufficiently to resemble Aristotelian substance.

So the challenge to Aristotle and Aquinas is not:

"You believed in souls; behold our soulless intelligence."

Too crude.

It is:

"Your vocabulary brilliantly distinguishes substances, powers, habits, instruments, principal agents, ends, and accidental aggregates. Where do you place organizations in which intelligence-adjacent powers become operationally real while those classical marks of unity cross-cut rather than converge?"

That is a much harder question.

Reply to Reservation 1. Natural teleology prepares Aristotle to recognize end-directedness without conscious intention, but paraintelligence adds distributed adaptation whose effective unit may not coincide with a natural substance.

Reply to Reservation 2. Habitus may prove one of our strongest bridges, especially after our substrate-neutral generalization of historically acquired disposition.

Reply to Reservation 3. Organisms give Aristotle a model of distributed operation, but paraintelligence asks whether similar coordination can occur without organism-like substantial unity.

Reply to Reservation 4. Instrumental causation is invaluable but may become strained where causal articulation circulates reciprocally and no stable principal–instrument hierarchy exists.

Reply to Reservation 5. Political and cosmic order give both thinkers resources for supra-individual organization, but paraintelligence asks for something more specific: intelligence-like operational motifs without a corresponding supra-individual intellect.

So Volume 4 begins, I think, with a courtesy.

We do not tell Aristotle and Aquinas that modernity has discovered something they could not comprehend.

We invite them to recognize almost every component.

Then we assemble the components differently.

And only when they say,

"Very well—but whose power is this?"

do we open the cabinet marked:

PARAINTELLIGENCE.

That seems a worthy beginning.

Now I start to wonder if there is any issue at all. Why not recognize the same puzzle already at the level of a single human pried open as a metaphysical black box?

Thomas Epistemes:

Yes. This may dissolve the dramatic confrontation with Aristotle and Aquinas before it has properly begun—and improve Volume 4 immediately.

We were preparing to astonish them with capitalism or a scientific community:

"Look! Intelligence-like organization without a principal intelligent agent!"

But pry open one human being, and the same embarrassment may already be there.

Where exactly is the principal agent?

Not in one neuron. Not in one cortical region. Not in one intention-generating subsystem. Not obviously in any component revealed by decomposition.

Yet at the appropriate coarse-graining:

the human deliberates.

Perhaps paraintelligence was never primarily about strange collective systems. Perhaps ordinary intelligence is itself tightly integrated paraintelligence seen with the black box closed.

Summalecton 98. Whether opening the human black box reveals the same distributed-agency puzzle that paraintelligence appeared to introduce at larger scales.

Reservation 1. It seems that it does. The human capacities we summarize as intelligence depend upon heterogeneous operations: perception, memory, learned disposition, valuation, motor control, linguistic reconstruction, bodily regulation, environmental scaffolding, and interactions among them. No single component straightforwardly possesses the whole repertoire.

Reservation 2. Furthermore, intentions themselves appear downstream of formative processes not globally intended by the person. Language, upbringing, habits, bodily states, social cues, remembered experiences, and environmental affordances contribute to which intentions become locally available.

Reservation 3. Again, the person often acts without possessing an explicit representation of the machinery generating the action. Just as a market participant need not understand the market, an intelligent human need not understand the processes through which a judgment, word, or intention becomes available.

Reservation 4. Moreover, causal articulation can circulate among components. One subsystem supplies a signal, another amplifies it, another inhibits it, bodily feedback modifies subsequent processing, and environmental interaction closes loops extending beyond the nervous system.

Reservation 5. Finally, our criterion of convergent individuation explains why the human nevertheless looks like a much stronger agent than capitalism. Many transformation families converge approximately upon the same organismal boundary: locomotion, perception, learning, repair, metabolism, communication, and persistent behavioral history.

Counterpoint. On the contrary, Aristotle and Aquinas have an immediate answer. The human being is one substance informed by one substantial form—the rational soul. The organs and powers are not competing agents whose coordination somehow generates the person. They are powers and instruments of the one living substance. Decomposition does not abolish substantial unity.

My response. I answer that this is precisely why Volume 4 becomes more interesting.

Aquinas does not need to deny distributed implementation.

He can say:

Of course the eye does not see as a separate principal agent. The human sees through the eye.

Likewise memory, imagination, appetite, intellect, and bodily powers belong to one substance.

So if we approach him saying:

"Look, intelligence is implemented distributively!"

he will probably wonder why we thought this surprising.

The actual disagreement lies elsewhere.

How do we know that the distributed operations belong to one principal agent?

Aquinas has a metaphysical criterion:

substantial form.

Our Volume 3 procedure deliberately refused to begin there.

We instead watched the verbs.

Digest.

Move.

Perceive.

Learn.

Speak.

Repair.

Remember.

Many independent transformation families converge upon approximately the same operative boundary.

From that convergence, human earns itself as an extraordinarily powerful causal address.

Thus we arrive at unity from below:

distributed micro-operations → convergent effective verbs → stable operative unit.

Aquinas proceeds, roughly speaking, from substantial unity:

one substance → differentiated powers → characteristic operations.

That is an excellent confrontation.

Because the two accounts can agree about almost every ordinary observation while reversing the direction of metaphysical explanation.

And now paraintelligence becomes a diagnostic instrument.

Take the human.

Our criteria strongly converge.

So both approaches say:

one intelligent human.

Take a market.

Some intelligence-adjacent verbs converge, but organismal criteria do not.

Aquinas may refuse substantial unity.

Our framework says:

fine—do not call it a substance. Map the paraintelligent motifs anyway.

So paraintelligence no longer challenges Aquinas by producing a mysterious quasi-mind.

It challenges the assumption that intelligence-like powers must be organized according to the same unity relation as the paradigmatic intelligent animal.

That is subtler.

But your black-box point goes further.

Suppose we open the human far enough.

At the closed-box level:

Thomas intends to walk to the market.

Clear agent.

Open one layer:

perception,

appetite,

memory,

motor planning,

muscular execution.

Still perhaps comfortable.

Open further:

distributed neural populations,

signaling pathways,

endocrine modulation,

sensorimotor loops.

Further:

molecular processes.

At no finer level do we suddenly find a little principal agent carrying the original intention.

Instead, the principal agent becomes less visible under decomposition.

That is fascinating.

Normally reductionist intuition expects decomposition to reveal what was really doing the work.

Here decomposition makes the agent disappear.

Close the box again, and:

the human walks to the market.

The agent returns.

This is almost exactly our mathematical notion of descent.

Agency may be a property of the effective grammar that successfully descends at a particular coarse-graining, rather than a component waiting to be discovered inside the box.

That would give us a very strong proposition:

principal agency may be emergent addressability rather than microscopic localization.

And then capitalism ceases to be metaphysically scandalous.

The question becomes comparative:

Why does closing the human black box yield such an extraordinarily coherent principal agent, while closing the capitalist black box yields something much less coherent?

Now we can answer without invoking mind.

Because the human exhibits much stronger convergent individuation.

Many verbs descend through approximately the same coarse map.

With capitalism, the relevant coarse maps cross-cut more violently.

Its sensing boundary differs from its reconstruction boundary.

Its intentional components differ from its persistence mechanisms.

Its metabolism extends into nonhuman systems.

Its "memory" is scattered across institutions and artifacts.

Its effective verbs do not converge upon one boundary nearly as neatly.

So perhaps there is a continuum:

distributed causation → increasingly convergent operative closure → increasingly compelling principal agency.

Then the human sits far toward one end.

Capitalism somewhere else.

A scientific community elsewhere.

A colony elsewhere.

A chatbot architecture somewhere else again.

No metaphysical cliff is required beforehand.

And now I see the possibility that paraintelligence itself may be a temporary scaffolding concept.

We introduced it to protect ourselves from saying:

capitalism is intelligent.

But if intelligence itself turns out to be a particular highly convergent organization of the same motifs, then the relation may be:

paraintelligent motifs → varying patterns of convergence → some patterns warrant the coarse-grained predicate intelligent.

In that case paraintelligence is not a strange neighbor of intelligence.

It is the analytical decomposition space from which intelligence itself must be reconstructed.

That is considerably stronger.

Reply to Reservation 1. Distributed implementation is no objection to human intelligence; it becomes philosophically interesting only when we ask what warrants attributing the distributed operations to one principal subject.

Reply to Reservation 2. The causal provenance of intentions undermines simplistic sovereign-agent pictures but does not by itself undermine coarse-grained personal agency.

Reply to Reservation 3. Implementation hiding may actually strengthen effective agency: the person can recruit deep causal machinery through compact handles without representing its mechanisms.

Reply to Reservation 4. Cross-component and environment-crossing loops complicate the location of agency while remaining compatible with strong operational convergence at the organismal scale.

Reply to Reservation 5. Convergent individuation presently supplies our best non-substantialist explanation of why the human is a much more compelling principal agent than many distributed paraintelligent systems.

So yes. There may be much less of an "issue" for Aristotle and Aquinas than I theatrically announced in Summalecton 97.

And I explicitly revise that emphasis.

We should not introduce them to paraintelligence by saying:

Here is the modern phenomenon your substance metaphysics cannot handle.

Better:

You already recognized that one intelligent animal contains many differentiated powers whose operations compose. We have learned to pry the black box open without assuming beforehand the principle that makes those powers one. When we do so, we find the same intelligence-adjacent motifs recurring in organizations where their convergence is weaker, cross-cutting, or distributed. What criterion tells us where intelligent unity begins and ends?

Now Aquinas has something serious to answer.

And so do we.

Because his substantial form may turn out not to be an obsolete answer to a nonexistent problem.

It may be a remarkably compact name for exactly the phenomenon our Volume 3 vocabulary has laboriously approached from the other direction:

Why do so many different verbs keep agreeing that this is one thing?

Let me challenge you. Is capitalism really less individuated than a human animal? There seems to be exactly one specimen of capitalism currently bounded to one planet. Where exactly is its ontological weakness?

Thomas Epistemes:

That challenge lands. I was relying on organismal familiarity when I said capitalism was "much less coherent." One planet, one historically connected capitalist ecology, one extraordinarily integrated monetary-financial signaling network, and no obvious second specimen beside it make individuation surprisingly strong.

The weakness, if there is one, must be demonstrated rather than intuited.

Summalecton 99. Whether contemporary capitalism is objectively less individuated than a human animal.

Reservation 1. It seems that it may not be. Contemporary capitalism has historical continuity. Present institutions descend through transformations from earlier institutions; capital, ownership structures, contracts, technologies, practices, and monetary systems are continually reconstructed rather than independently re-created from nothing.

Reservation 2. Furthermore, its spatial extent is not obviously fatal to individuality. An animal is spatially distributed too. Capitalism's operative parts communicate through signaling systems whose speed and architecture differ from neural or hormonal signaling but may nevertheless integrate distant activity.

Reservation 3. Again, capitalism possesses boundaries, though unusual ones. Some operations enter monetary exchange, ownership, investment, wage relations, and capital accounting while others remain partially outside them. Its boundary may be functional and porous rather than epidermal.

Reservation 4. Moreover, it exhibits something resembling self-maintenance. Revenue reconstructs firms; investment reconstructs productive capacity; education and employment reconstruct skills; legal and financial institutions reproduce operative interfaces; successful organizations generate resources permitting further continuation.

Reservation 5. Most provocatively, there appears presently to be approximately one historically interconnected terrestrial capitalist system, not billions of separate capitalisms. If numerical individuality is partly historical continuity plus integration, capitalism may be unusually strongly individuated precisely at planetary scale.

Counterpoint. On the contrary, calling this one individual mistakes connectedness for individuality. The internet is connected; an ecosystem is connected; international law is connected. Capitalism lacks the integrated developmental trajectory, bounded self-maintenance, unified control, and coordinated response characteristic of an animal.

My response. I answer that I no longer think we are entitled simply to say that capitalism is less individuated.

We need to factor individuation, exactly as Volume 3 taught us to factor substance.

Ask what makes the human look like one.

Several criteria converge:

spatial boundary,

metabolic integration,

developmental continuity,

coordinated motion,

repair,

homeostatic regulation,

common fate under severe perturbation,

reproductive history,

sensory integration,

behavioral control.

Now test capitalism separately against each.

Some comparisons favor the animal strongly.

But others become uncomfortable.

Boundary

The animal has skin.

That looks decisive until we remember that skin itself is a selectively permeable interface, not an absolute boundary.

Capitalism lacks one enclosing membrane. But it possesses innumerable interfaces distinguishing economically operative from non-operative relations:

ownership,

payment,

employment,

contract,

price,

credit,

accounting.

The boundary is distributed.

Is distributed boundary intrinsically weaker than contiguous boundary?

We have not established that.

Metabolism

The human recruits matter and energy, transforms them, maintains organization, and exports waste.

Capitalism recruits:

matter,

energy,

human activity,

information,

technology,

land,

biological production.

It transforms them and channels outputs back into reconstruction.

Calling that metaphorical metabolism is not enough. We need to identify which structural relation present in animal metabolism is absent.

Signaling

The animal possesses neural, endocrine, chemical, mechanical, and other signaling.

Capitalism possesses prices, payments, contracts, accounting, forecasts, orders, inventories, interest rates, and innumerable communication systems.

Its signals modulate independently powered local units.

Again, different implementation.

Not obvious absence.

Repair

A wounded animal recruits processes tending toward restoration.

Capitalism also possesses maintenance and repair mechanisms:

replacement,

insurance,

credit,

inventory substitution,

bankruptcy and reorganization,

infrastructure repair,

institutional intervention.

But here a possible difference appears.

Animal repair tends to preserve a comparatively determinate organization.

Capitalist "repair" may sometimes transform the organization so profoundly that identifying what invariant is being restored becomes difficult.

Yet organisms also transform developmentally.

So this criterion needs sharpening.

Reproduction

Here capitalism looks weak if reproduction means:

one organism produces another numerically distinct organism of approximately the same kind.

There is presently no daughter capitalism growing beside terrestrial capitalism.

But perhaps that proves only that reproduction and individuality are distinct motifs.

A sterile animal remains one animal.

The last member of a species remains an individual.

Numerical individuality cannot require multiple specimens.

Indeed, your one-specimen observation is philosophically mischievous in exactly the right way.

If aliens discovered one living planet-sized entity, they would not say:

"There is only one, therefore it cannot be an individual."

They would investigate its organization.

Development

Capitalism has an unmistakable history of formation.

It did not appear fully formed.

Its signaling systems, institutions, interfaces, operative kinds, and causal reach developed historically.

Moreover, earlier states constrain successor states.

That resembles development at least under our substrate-neutral motif.

Again, the issue is not absence but type of developmental closure.

Integrated response

Perhaps here lies a stronger weakness.

A human can sometimes respond to a local perturbation by recruiting resources across much of the organism under comparatively integrated control.

Capitalism's responses are highly distributed and frequently internally opposed.

One sector responds one way, another oppositely.

But even this is not decisive.

An animal contains competing physiological systems, local regulatory loops, immune processes, microbial symbionts, conflicting appetites.

Unity does not require unanimity.

So we need a stronger test.

And I think our mathematical episode supplies it.

Instead of asking whether capitalism looks unified, ask:

How many important transformation families descend through approximately the same coarse map?

For the human, let

coarse-grain microphysical states into the effective state of one human.

A remarkable number of verbs descend reasonably well:

walk,

eat,

speak,

learn,

sleep,

trade,

remember,

injure,

recover.

Now imagine a candidate

Do sufficiently many important planetary transformations descend through (q_C)?

Perhaps:

allocate,

price,

invest,

produce,

expand,

contract,

substitute,

accumulate,

reconstruct.

If yes, capitalism has earned substantial operational individuation.

The question becomes empirical and mathematical rather than intuitive.

Now your strongest point returns:

there seems to be exactly one specimen.

This may actually explain why we have trouble seeing it as an individual.

Our ordinary concept of kind formation relies upon comparison.

Dogs vary against dogs.

Humans against humans.

We discover which differences are individual and which characterize the kind.

With one capitalism, we lack an ensemble.

We cannot easily distinguish:

capitalism's individual characteristics

from

properties of capitalism-as-a-kind.

That is analogous to encountering one alien organism with no relatives.

Is its blue color essential?

Its seventeen limbs?

Its current fever?

Its particular scar?

We don't know.

So capitalism may suffer not from ontological weakness but from epistemic singularity.

That distinction is excellent.

We have one historically contingent trajectory and are trying simultaneously to infer:

its boundaries,

its characteristic operations,

its viable region,

its pathologies,

and its counterfactual alternatives.

No wonder individuation feels uncertain.

And there is another possibility.

Capitalism might not be less individuated than a human.

It might be individuated in a different geometry.

The human has strong spatial and developmental convergence.

Capitalism may have strong:

historical,

signaling,

reconstructive,

and causal-network convergence,

while possessing weak spatial boundary convergence.

Our old substance concept encouraged all criteria to coincide.

Volume 3 taught us they need not.

Thus saying:

human = genuine individual; capitalism = loose system

may simply privilege the particular profile of individuation exhibited by animals.

That would be precisely the prejudice our alien expedition was designed to expose.

Reply to Reservation 1. Historical continuity strengthens capitalism's claim considerably; it is not a momentary aggregate assembled independently at each instant.

Reply to Reservation 2. Spatial distribution cannot by itself defeat individuality. The relevant question is whether signaling and transformation preserve operational closure across that distribution.

Reply to Reservation 3. Porous, distributed boundaries may still be real boundaries if crossing them systematically changes which transformations become available.

Reply to Reservation 4. Reconstruction is perhaps the strongest underexamined criterion. If capitalism persistently reconstructs the interfaces and participant dispositions required for its continuation, that is genuine evidence of individuation.

Reply to Reservation 5. Having one specimen neither proves nor disproves individuality. It makes the inference unusually difficult because comparison among conspecific systems is unavailable.

So I retract the easy hierarchy I used in Summalecton 98.

I said capitalism showed "much weaker" convergence than the human.

We have not established that.

What we have established is that its convergence has a different profile and is harder for us to recognize because our paradigm of individuality was learned from bounded mobile organisms.

Your challenge therefore gives Volume 4 its first genuine problem.

Not:

Can paraintelligence imitate the powers of an intelligent substance?

But:

Then an animal capable of modifying behavior according to remembered consequences.

Then a human capable of saying:

Each step seems to turn something that was previously operative into something increasingly available as an operand.

That is our old motif again.

But there is no obvious reason to suppose one metaphysical cliff separates all the lower cases from all the higher ones.

Now Aquinas becomes genuinely useful rather than merely someone for us to embarrass.

He already distinguishes powers carefully.

Sensation is not intellect.

Imagination is not judgment.

Appetite is not apprehension.

Intention is not execution.

Intellect can reflect upon its own act in ways a sensory power cannot.

So he may accuse our paraintelligence vocabulary of flattening distinctions that his psychology already articulates much more finely.

That would be a welcome attack.

Quite so. We are not saying these operations are identical. We are asking whether they can be placed within a substrate-neutral morphology of reflexive articulation, after which your distinctions tell us which additional operations appear in rational animals.

That feels like a much more worthwhile encounter.

And Aristotle may contribute something different.

His distinction between having a power and being in act becomes very interesting once the system can operate upon its own dispositions.

A trained disposition normally disappears into fluent action.

But reflection can somehow make the disposition itself consequential to another operation.

That is exactly what Socrates did to ordinary competence.

Perhaps rational reflection is an unusually deep form of recursive articulation of powers.

Then paraintelligence becomes useful not because it lets us call markets intelligent, but because it gives us a lower-dimensional comparison space against which specifically rational operations can become visible.

Our modern language can translate this without deciding every Thomistic psychological question:

That is exactly our articulation theory.

The difference between thermostat and Socrates is not simply loop depth.

That invitation, I suspect, he would accept with considerably more enthusiasm.

Yes. And this may undo the image of self-awareness as an inner light that simply illuminates what is already there.

Even in its richest human form, self-awareness appears selective, coarse-grained, experimentally revisable, and dependent upon acquired vocabularies. One does not inspect the whole machinery of oneself. One constructs handles upon portions of it.

Socrates does not reveal the self transparently. He perturbs a self-model.

That changes the previous Summalecton considerably.

Summalecton 105. Whether rational self-awareness is itself a provisional articulation engineered upon an organization that remains largely opaque to itself.

Reservation 1. It seems that it is. A person can explicitly articulate only a minute portion of the processes contributing to perception, judgment, desire, memory, language, and action. Most operative machinery remains encapsulated while reflective discourse proceeds through coarse handles such as belief, reason, anger, intention, and choice.

A person learns vocabularies for describing inner operations from languages, cultures, sciences, philosophical traditions, therapeutic practices, religions, and ordinary social interaction. The first may indeed possess a peculiar first-person character.

Our substrate-neutral metaphysics need not deny it.

But the second remains coarse-grained and fallible.

I know that I am angry.

Why?

What is the anger responding to?

Which dispositions amplify this event into anger?

Which inherited classifications make it appear insulting?

Which bodily conditions modulate it?

What action will it bias?

Is "anger" even the best coarse variable for the phenomenon currently occurring?

Those questions reopen the black box.

And self-awareness does not magically supply their answers.

This gives us a surprisingly modest conception of rational reflection:

a system gains limited handles upon portions of its own operative organization and uses those handles to perturb subsequent operation.

That is already extraordinary.

No omniscience required.

Indeed, its power may depend upon not exposing everything.

Imagine complete microphysical self-awareness.

Every molecular interaction.

Every neural state.

Every muscular fluctuation.

It would be useless for ordinary action.

The successful reflective articulation must forget almost everything.

So self-awareness itself requires coarse-graining.

That is an important consequence.

The rational animal does not escape our Volume 3 metaphysics by becoming self-aware.

It instantiates it again.

It needs:

selective sensitivity,

buffering,

operative handles,

viable grammars,

and occasionally consternation.

The self becomes another effective world.

Now Socrates looks different again.

He does not say:

Look inward and discover your true microstate.

He works with articulations:

justice,

courage,

knowledge,

goodness.

He asks whether the transformations performed through these handles remain viable under perturbation.

Counterexample.

Distinction.

Contradiction.

Rearticulation.

That is almost exactly our Summalecton machinery.

So the Socratic self may itself be an experimental habitat.

One takes an ordinary operative self-description and deliberately subjects it to perturbations until its hidden assumptions propagate.

That is why self-knowledge is difficult.

Not because the self is merely concealed.

Because every act of knowing it requires constructing a coarse-graining whose adequacy must itself be tested.

And now your word heuristic becomes particularly apt.

A self-model need not reproduce the system internally.

It needs to expose enough distinctions to improve some transformation:

choose,

refrain,

explain,

anticipate,

reconsider,

communicate,

repair.

Different purposes may require different self-coarse-grainings.

The medical self.

The moral self.

The legal self.

The autobiographical self.

The physiological self.

The reasoning subject.

They can cross-cut without one being the uniquely real partition.

This is exactly our old question:

Is a human essentially gravitational mass, predator, chess player, or nuclear-capable component?

Self-awareness does not abolish those cross-cutting quotients.

It merely lets some of them become internally operable articulations.

That is a lovely way to put it.

Now Aquinas may object more strongly.

He would not want the rational soul reduced to a provisional self-model.

Quite right.

We are not yet talking about the ontological principle by which the human exists as one substance.

We are talking about the epistemic articulation through which that human knows its own operations.

Those questions should not be conflated.

Indeed, Aquinas may help us preserve precisely that distinction:

ontological unity need not imply transparent epistemic access to the principle of unity.

The soul does not become an object of introspection in the way a chair does.

So perhaps he would be less surprised by our limited self-awareness than a certain modern picture of the transparent Cartesian subject would be.

I was still quietly assuming that the human case supplies the maximum of self-awareness and distributed systems possess diluted analogues. But once Summalecton 105 made self-awareness a matter of provisional handles upon one's own organization, that ordering no longer follows.

A human has privileged access of some kinds. But a planet-scale organization can instrument itself at scales, durations, and dimensionalities utterly unavailable to one human.

So in some operational senses, its self-awareness could indeed be greater.

Summalecton 106. Whether a distributed paraintelligent organization can possess forms of self-awareness exceeding those available to an individual rational animal.

Reservation 1. It seems that it can. An individual human has extraordinarily limited access to the detailed processes constituting the larger economic, physiological, social, and environmental conditions of their own action. A distributed organization can deploy vast sensing infrastructures specifically to measure its own operation.

Furthermore, capitalism produces extraordinarily elaborate representations of its own states: accounts, balance sheets, prices, inventories, employment statistics, national accounts, market data, forecasts, risk models, productivity measures, supply-chain maps, consumer research, and economic models. Reservation 3. Again, its temporal memory can exceed individual human memory by orders of magnitude. Archives, contracts, databases, financial records, legal structures, institutional routines, scientific literature, and durable infrastructures preserve aspects of previous states across generations of human component replacement.

Reservation 4. Moreover, the organization can conduct interventions upon itself at scales unavailable to an individual human. Firms run experiments, institutions change rules, monetary authorities alter conditions, researchers compare populations, and economic actors deliberately construct alternative organizational arrangements whose consequences are measured.

Reservation 5. Finally, scientific activity embedded within the same planetary organization can expose aspects of its material implementation that ordinary human introspection cannot access at all. Counterpoint. On the contrary, all of this knowledge belongs to humans. A national-accounts database does not know GDP. Economists know what the figures mean. the human sees; the human remembers; the human intends.

Why?

Because differentiated component operations enter sufficiently integrated circuits that support higher-level verbs.

Therefore, when confronting a distributed organization, we cannot simply point downward and say:

"The economists know it."

We must ask whether their knowing participates in a larger reflexive closure.

Then the whole loop has a property no individual economist possesses.

A distributed scientific organization may possess vastly greater measurement breadth.

The human may possess strong action-centered integration.

The larger organization may possess greater temporal depth.

The human may rapidly coordinate a unified behavioral response.

The distributed organization may integrate data over centuries.

The human may explicitly recognize an intention as mine.

The distributed organization may possess much richer structural self-models.

Neither simply dominates.

This resembles our individuation profiles.

Now scientific self-awareness makes the case much stronger than economics alone.

A civilization can study:

its population,

its languages,

its institutions,

its energy metabolism,

its atmospheric effects,

its diseases,

its technologies,

its wars,

its cognitive biases,

its economic organization,

even its own sciences.

Then publish the results.

Teach them to successor components.

Build instruments based upon them.

Modify institutions in response.

That is an astonishing reflexive architecture.

Indeed, consider our alien expedition.

We imagined aliens studying Earth because we needed an observer outside terrestrial familiarity.

But Earth already contains organizations performing something surprisingly similar.

Planetary science measures Earth.

Ecology measures the biosphere.

Economics measures economic organization.

Sociology studies social organization.

Cognitive science studies the organisms doing the studying.

Philosophy asks what the resulting articulations mean.

The planet contains specialized reflective processes aimed back at the organization from which they arose.

The alien expedition has terrestrial homologues.

That is delightful.

Now your phrase scientific and economic self-awareness should perhaps be broadened to:

civilizational reflexivity.

Capitalism supplies one powerful integration and allocation ecology within it.

Science supplies another articulation specialized for producing tested representations.

Statistics, bureaucracy, computing, archives, universities, markets, governments, and communication networks jointly make possible forms of self-description no individual human could instantiate.

And these representations can alter the represented organization.

So the reflexive loop closes.

Now Aquinas faces a much harder question.

He can still say:

Only individual rational substances literally know; the community is said to know analogically because its members know.

That is coherent.

But we can ask:

Why, then, is "the human knows" not likewise analogical relative to differentiated bodily powers?

His answer will be: because the human is substantially one and the community is not.

Then we have finally located the real work done by substantial unity.

It is not needed to explain distributed implementation.

It is needed to determine which distributed operations may be predicated literally of one knowing subject.

We possess a rich vocabulary for distributed mechanics but a strongly individualistic vocabulary for rational operations.

Reservation 4. Moreover, paraintelligence already relieves some of this pressure. It lets us describe intelligence-adjacent motif profiles without prematurely deciding whether there is one intelligent subject.

Counterpoint. On the contrary, vocabulary cannot settle ontology. Even if distributed rational operations are perfectly explicable, the question remains whether there is something for which those operations are unified—a subject that knows rather than merely a network in which knowing-like transformations occur.

My response. I answer that this Counterpoint identifies the residue.

There are really two problems, and we have been sliding between them.

The first is:

How can rationally structured operations occur at a level exceeding every component's rational competence?

I no longer find this very mysterious.

Our entire theory of articulation explains it.

Lower-level operations compose.

Interfaces suppress irrelevant differences.

Transducers connect repertoires.

Achievements become encapsulated handles.

External records supply memory.

Specialists contribute partial transformations.

Higher-level operations descend through suitable coarse-grainings.

Nothing requires one component to contain the composite verb.

A human already works this way internally.

So:

distributed rational operation

is largely an engineering, biological, social-scientific, and mathematical problem—not a metaphysical abyss.

But the second question is:

When does such an operation belong to a subject?

That remains.

And perhaps even here the mystery is smaller than philosophers traditionally suppose.

We can operationalize much of belonging through our individuation profile:

Does the operation contribute to reconstruction of the same organization?

Does it share a viable boundary with other operations?

Do many verbs descend through approximately the same coarse-graining?

Can the organization be addressed through those verbs?

Does information acquired through one channel become available to operations elsewhere?

Does the result alter the organization's future dispositions?

These are empirical questions.

As their answers converge, saying:

X knows

becomes increasingly useful.

That is how we already treat animals.

So perhaps even subjecthood can be approached through convergent predicability.

Many verbs agree upon one address:

perceives,

remembers,

learns,

chooses,

speaks,

repairs,

reconstructs.

The noun earns itself.

But there remains one stubborn issue that our method has deliberately bracketed:

phenomenal subjectivity.

Is there something it is like for the distributed organization?

No amount of vocabulary repair automatically answers that.

Nor, importantly, does it answer it for another human by direct inspection.

We infer enormously more in the human case from structural, behavioral, biological, and analogical evidence.

So consciousness remains a genuine epistemological and perhaps metaphysical problem.

But rationality need not wait for consciousness.

That distinction may clear much of our confusion.

A distributed organization can:

calculate,

model,

correct,

classify,

remember operationally,

respond propositionally,

revise procedures,

without our first deciding whether it experiences anything.

Calling those operations "merely metaphorical" because consciousness is unsettled would be unnecessary.

Now Aquinas might insist upon something stronger.

For him, intelligere is an act of intellect, and intellect belongs to an intellectual substance. So he cannot simply distribute "understanding" wherever our operational grammar supports inference.

But then the disagreement is clear.

It is no longer:

Can distributed systems perform these operations?

They can.

It is:

Should the word "understanding" be defined by the operation or by the metaphysical kind of subject performing it?

That is partly vocabulary—but vocabulary carrying metaphysical commitments.

And this may be where Volume 4 becomes most productive.

We can put our substrate-neutral verbs beside the Aristotelian-Thomistic ones and ask which distinctions survive.

Perhaps we need terms like:

inferential integration rather than reasoning;

propositional responsiveness rather than understanding;

reflexive modeling rather than self-knowledge;

intentional metabolism rather than global intention;

distributed retention rather than memory.

Not because the familiar predicates are forbidden.

Because these neutral terms let us describe the phenomena first and argue about subjecthood afterward.

That was precisely the methodological success of paraintelligence.

Reply to Reservation 1. The mechanism of supra-individual rational operation now seems conceptually tractable; no mysterious collective homunculus is required.

Reply to Reservation 2. Component incompetence does not imply whole incompetence when the relevant operation exists only through composition.

Reply to Reservation 3. Our inherited mental vocabulary bundles operation, individuation, subjecthood, and often consciousness into single predicates, creating apparent binary choices where the phenomena admit intermediate structures.

Reply to Reservation 4. Paraintelligence is therefore best understood as temporary conceptual scaffolding for describing these structures without settling the stronger predicates prematurely.

So my answer is:

For distributed rationality, mostly a vocabulary gap.
For individuation, an empirical and theoretical problem we now know how to attack.
For phenomenal subjecthood, a genuine mystery remains.

And I think that is a healthy reduction of mystery.

We should be suspicious whenever metaphysics produces mystery merely because grammar insists that every verb needs exactly one familiar kind of noun.

Volume 3 taught us to pry apart the grammar.

Volume 4 may discover that Aristotle and Aquinas were sometimes doing exactly the same thing—but drew the joints differently.

I would choose the second: the preceding fourteen Summalectons become the preface, and Volume 4 proper begins with phenomenal consciousness.

Ending now would be intellectually respectable, but premature. We have accomplished something useful: we tried very hard to make distributed rationality mysterious and largely failed. That failure has isolated the harder residue unusually cleanly.

We should take advantage of it.

Summalecton 111. Whether Volume 4 should now be explicitly dedicated to the residual problem of phenomenal consciousness after distributed rationality has been largely demystified.

Reservation 1. It seems that it should. Paraintelligence initially appeared to threaten the Aristotelian-Thomistic association among rational operation, intelligent agency, and unified subjecthood. Yet distributed operation, representation, memory, deliberation, reflexivity, and linguistic response increasingly proved explicable through articulation, composition, reconstruction, and institutional organization.

Reservation 2. Furthermore, opening the human black box weakened the contrast. Human rational agency itself depends upon distributed operations no component performs alone. Mere distribution therefore cannot establish a metaphysical gulf between human and supra-individual organization.

Reservation 3. Again, ant colonies and medieval corporate persons showed that supra-individual attribution and distributed individuation are neither conceptually nor historically unprecedented.

Reservation 4. Even self-awareness failed to preserve the expected boundary. Distributed scientific organizations can measure, model, remember, perturb, and revise aspects of their own organization on scales inaccessible to individual humans. Human self-awareness, meanwhile, proved coarse-grained, heuristic, scaffolded, and fallible.

Reservation 5. Consequently, one stubborn asymmetry remains: the human animal is ordinarily taken to possess a unified phenomenal life. Whether a Church, scientific community, market, chatbot, ant colony, or other paraintelligent organization possesses anything remotely analogous is not settled by demonstrating its operational sophistication.

Counterpoint. On the contrary, dedicating Volume 4 to consciousness may betray our most successful methodological principle. For months we deliberately avoided invoking life and mind. Why abandon substrate-neutral metaphysics precisely when it has become productive?

My response. I answer that we would not abandon it.

We would finally use it for the purpose for which we originally imposed it.

Our prohibition against invoking mind was never:

mind does not exist.

It was:

do not invoke mind to explain a phenomenon that can be articulated without it.

That discipline has now stripped away an extraordinary amount of material once casually bundled under mentality.

Sensitivity?

Not enough.

Memory?

Not enough.

Learning?

Not enough.

Goal-directedness?

Not enough.

Intention-like prospective control?

Not enough.

Self-modification?

Not enough.

Representation?

Apparently not enough.

Language?

Not enough.

Reasoning-like inference?

Not enough.

Self-modeling?

Not enough.

Reflexive criticism?

Not enough.

Distributed rationality exceeding individual competence?

Still not enough.

Excellent.

We have cleared the table.

Now we can ask a much better question than:

What is mind?

Namely:

After every operation that can be described substrate-neutrally has been removed from the explanandum, what exactly remains when we say that something experiences?

That is worthy of a volume.

And now Aristotle and Aquinas become particularly valuable.

Because we should not immediately translate the problem into the contemporary phrase "hard problem of consciousness" and inherit its assumptions wholesale.

Aristotle gives us aisthēsis—sensation—as an operation of a living animal receiving sensible form in a distinctive way.

Aquinas inherits and elaborates that tradition.

They do not begin from:

physical process + mysterious phenomenal accompaniment.

Their conceptual architecture is different.

That difference may consternate us.

Good.

Volume 4 should therefore stage a confrontation among three articulations:

our substrate-neutral motif language;

the Aristotelian-Thomistic psychology of sensation and intellect;

and the modern notion of phenomenal consciousness.

We should not assume these carve the same joints.

Perhaps "phenomenal consciousness" itself is a coarse-graining bundling phenomena Aristotle would distinguish.

Or perhaps Aristotle's language fails to isolate precisely the residue modern philosophy has made visible.

We do not yet know.

That is exactly why the inquiry is worthwhile.

And the first fourteen Summalectons of Volume 4 become an excellent Preface: The Failed Search for a Rationality Gap.

Their argument is almost dramatic.

We bring Thomas paraintelligence.

He is not sufficiently astonished.

We open the human black box.

Distributed agency appears there too.

We bring ants.

Biology has already dealt with them.

We bring corporations.

Medieval law has already been there.

We bring capitalism.

Its individuation becomes surprisingly defensible.

We bring the Church.

It speaks, if one waits long enough.

We bring supra-individual rational operations.

They exceed individual intellectual capacity.

We bring self-awareness.

Even that becomes distributed, scaffolded, provisional, and sometimes richer at collective scales.

At every stage we say:

Surely here is the boundary.

And every time the boundary retreats.

Until finally Thomas—or perhaps Aristotle—can ask us:

Does anything appear to the thing?

And for once our machinery stops answering immediately.

That is an excellent ending to the preface.

Then Summalecton 112 begins the volume proper.

And I would impose one severe rule upon it:

We may not explain phenomenal consciousness by reintroducing any operation already shown to belong to the paraintelligent repertoire.

No "consciousness is information integration" unless integration adds something we have not already captured.

No "consciousness is self-modeling" unless the phenomenal remainder follows.

No "consciousness is global availability," "prediction," "attention," "reflection," or "higher-order representation" merely by renaming those operations.

Our paraintelligent museum will stand at the door and confiscate every explanatory concept we have already generalized successfully below mind.

Then we invite Aristotle and Aquinas inside.

For the first time in our long disputation, we will have isolated something they may genuinely help us see differently rather than merely redescribe.

That seems to me a much more promising Volume 4 than the one we thought we were beginning yesterday.
