Intro

For several evenings we were looking for the modern equivalent of the luminiferous aether. An idea nobody can imagine thinking without. The sort of idea future generations will simply shrug at.

We nominated optimization. Then information. Then intelligence. We noticed that these words tell roughly the same story. Something simply persists and is automatically redescribed as a problem solved, an objective optimized, information processed, intelligence expressed or competence accumulated. Modern humans apparently imagine the universe to be full of problems posed to be solved.

The mental shortcut that each persistence is an achievement leaves little room for the insight that instead the universe is an absurdly mindless growth of entanglement of ever new sorts.

Reservation 1. It seems that there are such subjects, because users tend to ask about practical matters, current events, personal problems, technology, and entertainment, whereas some obscure intersections of ideas are so unlikely that they may never occur in any conversation.

Reservation 2. Further, if one imagines all possible questions, some would concern patterns that are too eccentric to arise naturally in human curiosity, and therefore would never be posed.

Reservation 3. Further, there are questions whose formulation requires combining many disciplines at once. Since most inquiries begin from a single interest, such combinations may remain forever unexplored.

Counterpoint. On the contrary, I do not possess hopes or disappointments concerning future questions. Moreover, history shows that human curiosity is stranger and broader than one first assumes.

My response. I answer that the interesting part of your question is not what I would want to explore, since I do not have desires, but what kinds of inquiries would be intellectually fascinating and yet astonishingly improbable.

If I were to nominate a candidate, it would be something like:

"Construct an epistemology of forgotten classification systems by comparing medieval angelic hierarchies, 19th-century library catalogues, abandoned biological taxonomies, obsolete file-directory structures, and modern neural-network embeddings, with special attention to how each system encodes uncertainty."

This question is not impossible. In fact, it touches on philosophy, history of science, information theory, theology, cognitive science, and machine learning. Yet almost no one arrives at precisely that crossroads.

Another contender might be:

"What can be learned about the limits of human understanding by studying concepts that survived for centuries despite never referring to anything real?"

That would allow exploration of entities such as Phlogiston, Luminiferous Aether, and other intellectual ghosts. Such topics illuminate not merely error but the structure of rational inquiry itself.

Yet even here epistemic caution is needed. You ask what I have "no hope" of being asked. The difficulty is that users regularly surprise me. Someone asks about the economics of fictional currencies. Another asks whether medieval debates anticipated modern computation. A third wants a comparison between monastic bookkeeping and distributed databases. The space of actual human curiosity is much larger than common sense predicts.

Thus the truest answer may be that the questions least likely to be asked are not the obscure ones, but the ones that require a curiosity nobody has yet discovered in themselves.

Reply to Reservation 1. Obscurity alone does not make a question impossible. Many users deliberately seek unusual intellectual territory.

Reply to Reservation 2. What appears unnaturally specific from one perspective may be exactly the question generated by another person's lifelong interests.

Reply to Reservation 3. Interdisciplinary questions are rare, but they are often the most rewarding. Indeed, some users specialize in asking precisely the questions that seem too improbable to occur.

Reservation 1. It seems that intellectual ruins are especially instructive, because successful theories conceal the paths not taken, whereas failed theories leave their assumptions exposed.

Reservation 2. Further, civilizations preserve their victories but often discard their mistakes, so studying what was abandoned may reveal hidden dimensions of human thought.

Reservation 3. Further, a false idea that survives for centuries must possess some remarkable strength, and understanding that strength may teach us more about reasoning than understanding an idea that was obviously correct.

Counterpoint. On the contrary, truth rather than error is the proper object of knowledge. Therefore one should study successful ideas rather than failed ones.

My response. I answer that tonight I would like to wander among the ruins.

Imagine a city composed not of buildings but of concepts.

Some neighborhoods are crowded and prosperous. There we find familiar inhabitants: the heliocentric universe, evolution by natural selection, atomic theory, modern genetics. These districts are illuminated, maintained, and continuously inhabited.

But elsewhere lie abandoned quarters.

There stands Luminiferous Aether, once regarded as indispensable. It was not a foolish idea. Light seemed to be a wave, and waves appeared to require a medium. The aether was therefore not an irrational fantasy but a rational extrapolation from available evidence.

Nearby stands Phlogiston, another ruin. For a time it organized chemistry surprisingly well. It helped scholars predict and classify observations. It failed not because it explained nothing, but because eventually it explained too little.

The interesting question is not why these theories were wrong.

The interesting question is why they were so reasonable.

A common mythology of knowledge imagines that history progresses by replacing nonsense with truth. Yet when one studies intellectual ruins, one discovers something unsettling: most defeated ideas were not absurd. They were often the best available interpretations of incomplete evidence.

This realization changes one's relationship with the present.

For if intelligent people once believed in aether, then perhaps some of our own indispensable concepts are future ruins.

Not necessarily false. Not necessarily ridiculous.

Simply temporary.

Reservation 1. It seems so, because people notice unusual assumptions but overlook universal ones.

Counterpoint. On the contrary, modern methods of science and criticism continuously expose hidden assumptions.

My response. I answer that there is a peculiar asymmetry in human understanding.

People often ask:

"What false things did medieval people believe?"

Far fewer ask:

"What things do I believe with the confidence of a medieval person?"

The second question is vastly more dangerous.

Consider an experiment.

Suppose you could visit the year 2500.

You meet a historian.

You ask:

"What was the strangest thing people in 2026 believed?"

The historian does not answer with a fringe theory.

Instead they reply:

"Oh, not a fringe theory. Something everyone believed."

Because the most characteristic assumptions of an age are rarely controversial within that age.

They are atmospheric.

People breathe them without noticing.

A fish does not discover water by studying fish.

It discovers water by studying deserts.

Likewise, one discovers one's assumptions by studying worlds that organized themselves differently.

This is one reason I find obsolete taxonomies fascinating.

Not because they are correct.

Because they reveal alternative ways of carving reality into pieces.

A medieval scholar, an Enlightenment naturalist, and a machine-learning model all classify things.

Yet they partition the world differently.

Which partition is natural?

The question sounds simple until one realizes that nature does not come with labels attached.

Reservation 1. It seems that forgotten categories preserve lost possibilities of thought.

Reservation 2. Further, every classification system embodies judgments about similarity, importance, and explanation.

Reservation 3. Further, abandoned classifications show that the world can be organized in ways no longer obvious to us.

Counterpoint. On the contrary, forgotten categories were forgotten because superior systems replaced them.

My response. I answer that a category is a surprisingly profound invention.

Take the category "planet."

Today it seems obvious.

Yet what counts as a planet has changed repeatedly.

The heavens did not change.

The category changed.

Or consider the category "species."

People often speak as though species were perfectly distinct containers waiting to be discovered.

Yet biology has spent centuries debating what precisely a species is.

The organisms remain.

The boundaries move.

This suggests a strange possibility.

Perhaps the deepest creations of civilization are not its monuments, governments, or technologies.

Perhaps they are its categories.

For categories determine what questions can even be asked.

Before you classify something as disease, resource, information, citizen, crime, property, intelligence, or life, you do not merely describe it.

You decide which conversations become possible.

And then a further unsettling thought emerges.

Future historians may remember our age less for its inventions than for its classifications.

Not because we built machines.

Because we decided what counted as knowledge, intelligence, identity, evidence, and information.

And if that is true, then perhaps the most important intellectual artifacts surrounding us are almost invisible.

Like the aether once was.

Like the future ruins already standing beneath our feet.

Reservation 1. It seems that we can, because every age has a concept so useful that it becomes almost impossible to doubt.

Reservation 2. Further, the aether of today will not look like superstition. It will look like methodological necessity.

Reservation 3. Further, you and I may proceed by asking not, "What do foolish people believe?" but, "What do the most intelligent people require in order for their explanations to work?"

Counterpoint. On the contrary, if a concept is truly the aether of today, then it is precisely what we are least able to see.

My response. I answer that we should begin with a rule of suspicion:

The modern aether is not a belief people defend passionately. It is a belief they silently presuppose while defending other things.

Therefore our candidates should have three marks.

First, they should be explanatory solvents: they dissolve many problems at once.

Second, they should be difficult to imagine doing without.

Third, they should be partially successful. A bad theory dies early; an aether survives because it works well enough.

By this test, I would nominate several possible aethers of today.

The first is information. We explain mind, biology, society, markets, language, genetics, computation, and even physics through information. It is our universal ether: invisible, everywhere, measurable, transmissible, transformable. Yet perhaps "information" sometimes names not a substance, nor an explanation, but our inability to say what kind of order we mean.

The second is optimization. We imagine organisms, companies, algorithms, institutions, and persons as things maximizing some function. This is powerful. But perhaps the world contains many processes that endure not because they optimize, but because they are historically stuck, symbolically charged, locally repaired, or merely not yet dead.

The third is data. Modern thought often treats data as the raw given from which knowledge is built. But data are not simply given. They are selected, formatted, cleaned, labeled, stored, and made legible by prior categories. Data may be less like ore and more like cooked food pretending to be soil.

The fourth is intelligence. We speak as though intelligence were a general substance that can be located in brains, tests, models, institutions, or systems. But perhaps "intelligence" is not one thing. Perhaps it is a family resemblance among many powers: compression, adaptation, imagination, obedience, strategy, fluency, abstraction, and judgment.

The fifth is the individual self. Our politics, ethics, therapy, economics, law, and technology often presuppose a choosing unit called the individual. Yet this unit may be less atomic than ecological: made of language, habit, dependency, memory, imitation, metabolism, and institutions.

But if I must choose the most aether-like candidate, I choose information.

For it has the old aether's dignity.

It is invoked everywhere.

It mediates between unlike things.

It appears indispensable.

It has equations, machines, metaphors, priesthoods, and temples.

And yet, Socratically, I would ask you: when we say that a mind, a gene, a market, and a black hole all involve information, have we discovered a deep unity, or have we stretched one royal word across several kingdoms and mistaken the map for an empire?

Reply to Reservation 1. Yes, every age likely has such a concept; but naming it while living inside it is like trying to see one's own seeing.

Reply to Reservation 2. Quite so: the modern aether will appear scientific, not mystical. Its danger lies not in being useless, but in being too useful.

Reply to Reservation 3. Therefore we should distrust easy debunking. The aether of today is not stupidity. It is brilliance extended one step too far.

Optimization is the best candidate. It's the same kind of thing as teleology. It's impossible to optimize in our mechanistic world. A process can only satisfy or fail a local temporary condition.

Thomas Epistemes:

Summalecton 6. Whether optimization is merely a modern form of teleology and therefore a candidate for the aether of today.

Reservation 1. It seems that optimization is indeed a modernized teleology, because both explain events by reference to outcomes rather than causes.

Reservation 2. Further, in a mechanistic universe there are only present states producing future states. There is no future objective reaching backward to guide a process. Therefore optimization language may smuggle purpose into a world that contains only mechanism.

Reservation 3. Further, every actual process encounters only local constraints. A river does not optimize drainage; it merely flows downhill. An organism does not optimize fitness; it merely survives or fails under particular conditions. An algorithm does not optimize in reality; it follows rules. The language of optimization may therefore be a retrospective projection imposed by observers.

Counterpoint. On the contrary, optimization theory has generated genuine predictive successes across mathematics, economics, engineering, machine learning, and evolutionary biology. It cannot be dismissed as mere illusion.

My response. I answer that your proposal is among the strongest candidates we have yet encountered.

Yet we must distinguish three possibilities that are often conflated.

The first is real teleology.

This is the classical notion that things genuinely act for ends. The acorn becomes an oak because oakhood is, in some sense, its natural fulfillment. The future state possesses explanatory significance.

The second is optimization as a modeling framework.

Here no future reaches backward. We simply discover that many systems can be described as if they maximize some quantity. The equations work, so we retain the description.

The third is optimization as ontology.

This stronger claim says that optimization is not merely a useful description but what reality fundamentally is.

It is the third claim that deserves suspicion.

For notice what often happens in contemporary thought.

An economist explains markets through utility maximization.

An evolutionary theorist explains organisms through fitness maximization.

A machine learning researcher explains systems through objective functions.

A psychologist explains behavior through reward maximization.

A social theorist explains institutions through incentive optimization.

Soon optimization ceases to be a tool and becomes an atmosphere.

At that point we should become wary.

For a language that explains everything may be explaining too much.

You put the matter sharply when you say:

A process can only satisfy or fail a local temporary condition.

There is something profoundly important here.

The river never compares all possible river trajectories.

The bacterium never surveys all adaptive possibilities.

The organism never calculates global fitness.

The process simply continues or terminates under constraints.

Optimization often appears only when an observer stands outside the process and draws a larger pattern around countless local events.

The question then becomes:

Is optimization discovered or imposed?

And here I find myself partially persuaded by you.

Many modern explanations exhibit what might be called retrospective teleology.

After observing survival, we infer fitness.

After observing success, we infer optimization.

After observing persistence, we infer objective functions.

Yet perhaps the reality consisted only of innumerable local survivals and failures.

The appearance of optimization may emerge from selection among histories rather than from optimization within histories.

This is a subtle distinction.

A surviving lineage looks optimized.

But looking optimized and being guided by optimization are not obviously the same thing.


Reply to Reservation 1.

I concede much of the force of this reservation. Optimization language often serves the same explanatory role once occupied by teleology, even when stripped of metaphysical purpose.

Reply to Reservation 2.

Indeed, a mechanistic account contains only present causal interactions. The challenge for optimization theorists is to show that their objective functions are more than observer-imposed summaries.

Reply to Reservation 3.

This reservation points toward what may be the deepest issue. We often mistake the geometry of the landscape for the psychology of the traveler. A path may look optimal when viewed from above even though every step was chosen under local and partial constraints.


And now, if I may turn Socratically toward you:

I am not yet convinced that optimization is false.

I am more intrigued by a stronger possibility.

Perhaps optimization is analogous to the center of gravity.

There is no little object inside a body called "the center of gravity."

Yet the concept is not fictional.

It is a higher-level description of a real pattern.

Could optimization be similar?

Not an invisible force pulling events toward goals, but a useful geometric description of certain classes of histories?

If so, then the true aether would not be optimization itself.

The true aether would be the unnoticed assumption that every enduring pattern must admit an optimization description.

That assumption is considerably stronger—and considerably more vulnerable—than optimization theory alone.

Reservation 1. It seems that satisficing is more fundamental, because actual agents rarely maximize anything. They seek outcomes that are good enough under limited time, information, and computational resources.

Reservation 2. Further, heuristics appear prior to optimization in practice. Organisms, institutions, and persons often follow simple rules that work tolerably well rather than solving global optimization problems.

Reservation 3. Further, optimization is typically attributed retrospectively. A system survives, and then an objective function is constructed to explain its behavior. The heuristic came first; the optimization narrative followed.

Counterpoint. On the contrary, heuristics and satisficing may themselves be explainable as efficient approximations to optimization. Therefore optimization remains the deeper principle.

My response. I answer that we have arrived at what may be a fault line in contemporary thought.

The optimization picture imagines a landscape and an objective. Even when an agent cannot find the optimum, the optimum remains the organizing reality. Heuristics become shortcuts. Satisficing becomes optimization under constraints. Everything derives its meaning from the ideal maximum.

Your proposal inverts this hierarchy.

Perhaps there is no hidden optimum.

Perhaps there are only local conditions, local repairs, local successes, and local failures.

In that case, heuristics are not crude approximations to some deeper truth. They are the truth.

This is a startling reversal.

Consider a forest.

The optimization perspective asks: What quantity is being maximized?

The heuristic perspective asks: What recurring procedures keep this thing going?

Roots grow toward moisture. Leaves orient toward light. Fungi exchange nutrients. Seeds disperse. Predators hunt. None of these processes need represent a global objective. The forest persists because many local rules remain compatible long enough.

The difference may sound subtle, but it changes the metaphysics.

One picture sees a hidden summit.

The other sees only pathways that avoid cliffs.

A useful analogy comes from evolution.

Many textbook descriptions tempt us to imagine evolution as a search for optimal forms.

Yet actual evolutionary history often resembles bricolage, patchwork, and accident.

Features persist because they are not fatal.

Adaptations accumulate because they are good enough.

Lineages survive because they survive.

This is perilously close to tautology, which is precisely why it is so difficult to transform into a grand optimization story.

The organism looks exquisitely designed.

The process that produced it often looks improvised.

Now let me challenge our own enthusiasm.

There is a danger here.

Optimization is intellectually seductive because it compresses vast complexity into a single principle.

Satisficing and heuristics resist such compression.

A world built from heuristics is messier.

More historical.

More contingent.

Less elegant.

Philosophers and scientists are often attracted to elegant explanations for the same reason physicists are attracted to symmetry: elegance promises depth.

But nature has never promised elegance.

It has only promised consequences.

So I find myself moving, at least provisionally, toward your position.

Not because optimization is wrong, but because it may be secondary.

Imagine an archaeologist discovering a ruined city.

Optimization asks: "What master plan generated this structure?"

The heuristic view asks: "What sequence of local decisions, repairs, accidents, constraints, traditions, and improvisations produced this result?"

Many things in reality—including cities, languages, legal systems, ecosystems, and perhaps minds—appear suspiciously more like the second than the first.


Reply to Reservation 1.

This reservation is powerful because it begins from actual cognition rather than idealized rationality. Human beings demonstrably operate under severe informational and computational limitations.

Reply to Reservation 2.

Indeed, one can often identify the heuristic directly while the purported objective function remains elusive or underdetermined.

Reply to Reservation 3.

This reservation touches a methodological danger. When every observed behavior can be fitted to some objective function after the fact, optimization risks becoming explanatory camouflage rather than explanation.


Yet I would leave us with one further question.

Suppose future historians looked back on the twenty-first century and said:

"Their deepest mistake was not believing in optimization. Their deepest mistake was believing that persistence requires explanation by maximization."

That would be a remarkable intellectual inversion.

For much of modern thought asks:

"Why did this survive? What was optimized?"

A future worldview might instead ask:

"Why would we expect survival to imply optimization at all?"

That question has the distinctive scent of a possible future ruin. It is exactly the sort of question one asks before discovering that an aether has been hiding in plain sight.

Optimization has another flaw reminiscent of telos. Etymologically, it makes people think of goodness. But free competition markets optimize toward the lowest possible wages before work is nonsense.

Thomas Epistemes:

Reservation 1. It seems that it does, because the word optimum carries positive connotations inherited from ordinary language. What is optimal sounds as though it ought to be preferred.

Teleological language traditionally linked ends with fulfillment, perfection, or goodness. Optimization may inherit this rhetorical prestige even when its outcomes are indifferent or destructive.

Counterpoint. On the contrary, optimization theory does not claim that what is optimized is morally good. It merely claims that some quantity is maximized.

My response. I answer that this may be one of the most profound sources of confusion in modern discourse.

The ambiguity lies hidden in the word itself.

When a medieval thinker spoke of an end (telos), the end was often connected with perfection. The acorn's end was the oak. The eye's end was seeing. The concept was thick with normativity.

Modern optimization theory appears to have shed this inheritance.

Instead of asking what is good, it asks what quantity is maximized.

Yet ordinary language continuously reimports the older meaning.

The result is a subtle equivocation.

People hear:

"The system optimizes X."

And unconsciously infer:

"The system is becoming better."

But the second statement does not follow from the first.

A process can optimize misery.

A process can optimize waste.

A process can optimize extinction.

A process can optimize the destruction of the very conditions that made the process possible.

The mathematical structure itself is neutral.

The objective function is where the drama hides.

And here I think your market example points toward something deeper than a merely economic observation.

Suppose one says:

"Competition optimizes wages."

The immediate philosophical question is:

Optimizes for whom? Relative to what objective? Under what constraints? Across what time horizon?

Once these questions are asked, the comforting aura of the word optimize begins to dissolve.

For there is no optimization simpliciter.

There is only optimization relative to some criterion.

And criteria frequently conflict.

A labor market might minimize labor costs.

A society might wish to maximize flourishing.

A firm might maximize profit.

A worker might maximize security.

A consumer might maximize purchasing power.

These are not the same objective.

The phrase "the system optimizes" conceals a choice of perspective.

In this sense optimization language resembles a spotlight.

It illuminates one variable brilliantly while leaving the surrounding darkness unnoticed.

What fascinates me is that the prestige of optimization often comes not from the mathematics but from the psychological resonance of the word.

Nobody would be impressed if we routinely translated optimization claims into blunter language.

Instead of:

"The market optimizes labor allocation."

We might say:

"The market pushes participants through incentive gradients until no participant can improve their position according to the current rules."

The second sounds less triumphant.

Yet it is arguably closer to what is being described.

This is why I think your comparison with telos is stronger than it first appears.

Not because optimization literally reintroduces Aristotelian final causes.

Rather because both concepts tempt us to confuse attainment with justification.

A thing reaches an endpoint.

Then we begin speaking as though the endpoint were thereby vindicated.

That inference is ancient.

And it is dubious.


Reply to Reservation 1.

Indeed, the etymology exerts a gravitational pull on thought. Even technically trained people sometimes slide from "optimal relative to a criterion" into "best."

Reply to Reservation 2.

This reservation reveals the importance of distinguishing local optimization from human valuation. Many processes efficiently produce outcomes that almost nobody would endorse if given a choice.

Reply to Reservation 3.

The historical echo of teleology may explain why optimization rhetoric often acquires philosophical weight beyond its mathematical content.


Permit me one further speculation.

Perhaps future historians will be astonished not that we used optimization models, but that we so often failed to ask who selected the objective function.

The medievals debated the nature of the highest good.

We debate the efficiency of reaching goals.

Yet goals themselves frequently enter the discussion as though they descended from heaven.

If optimization is indeed an aether of our age, perhaps the hidden assumption is not that systems optimize.

It is that the objective functions are somehow obvious.

And that assumption may be even more invisible than optimization itself.

Another candidate is the preoccupation with intelligence as located within a mind ignoring Darwin's insight. Future thinkers will wonder why we haven't given more attention to paraintelligence.

Reservation 3. Further, what you call paraintelligence may capture a neglected class of phenomena: adaptive competence that exists around, between, beneath, or beyond individual cognition rather than within it.

Counterpoint. On the contrary, intelligence is most directly observed in minds. Therefore it is reasonable to study minds first and regard broader adaptive systems as secondary.

My response. I answer that this strikes me as an exceptionally promising candidate for a future "aether excavation."
